Ever wondered how do you get to install features or applications in Windows 10 as well as windows 11? Well, it’s the Windows Installer service that’s behind all your installations. But, even that’s prone to crashes at times, thus, leading to an error while installing applications.
If the Windows Installer breaks all of a sudden, your installation process or the app upgrades get stuck midway. You may see different types of error codes for the same issue, for instance – “Windows Installer Service could not be accessed”, “There’s a problem with this Windows Installer Package”, “Installation Package could not be opened”, and more.
But, no worries, as there are a couple of fixes that can help resolve the error effectively. Her’s how.
Method 1: Starting msiserver service
Step 1: Right-click on Taskbar and select Task Manager from the context menu.
Step 2: In the Task Manager windows, click on the Services tab. Now, scroll down, look for msiserver and select it. It’s the Windows Installer service.
Step 3: Right-click on msiserver and click on Start in the context menu.
This will start the Windows Installer service and you should not get the error anymore while installing programs. If the problem persists, try the 2nd method.
Method 2: Tweaking Windows installer properties in Services
Step 1: Click on the Start menu on your desktop and type Services in the search box. Click on the result to open the Services window.
Step 2: In the Services window, look for Windows Installer on the right-hand side, under the category – Name and select it.
Step 3: Now, double-click on the Windows Installer > Windows Installer Properties > General tab > Service Status > click on Stop.
Step 4: Now, click on the Start button to start the service again.
This method should help fix the error with the Windows Installer and you should now be able to install without any hassles. If this method also doesn’t work, try the 3rd method.
Method 3: Using command prompt
Step 1: Search cmd in windows 10 search box and right click and choose run as administrator.
Step 2: Now, execute the Given below commands one by one
Case 1:- If your PC is 64 bit PC, run the following commands.
%windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /unregister
%windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /regserver
Case 2: – If your PC is 32 bit PC, then run the commands given below
%windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /unregister
%windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver

Method 4: Make sure the path of installer is not too long
The installation may throw errors when the file path of the setup file is too long. Try to move the setup file to a new location with short path and try again.
Method 5: Try to login as admin and then try again
Make usre you are having administrative access while installing the setup file. Also, make sure the setup file or file path does not contain any special characters.
Method 6: Reset installer service in Registry

3. Now, Click on File and then click on Save as.
4. Now, name the file as fixing.reg
Don’t forget to select All files in Save as type:
5. Now, right click on fixing.reg and click on merge.
6. Restart your computer
Method 7: Deleting the duplicate msiexec file, if it exists
1. Open File explorer and go to C:\Windows\System32
2. Now, locate msiexec.exe file, now, try to locate another msiexec file without .exe extension. If a file named msiexec exists without having msiexec extension, then delete that file.
That’s it! Your Windows Installer should be running now and you should be able to download apps and features, without any hassles.
