Unable to classify, AirPods Pro 2 Hearing test fails – How to fix

The Hearing Test feature is introduced in the latest version of AirPods Pro 2 wearables that can assess user’s hearing ability automatically. But, you would not want to run into ‘Unable to classify‘ error message while doing this test. We have explained the reason behind the problem, followed by a troubleshooting guide that should help the users troubleshoot the problem on their own.

Why am I getting the ‘Unable to classify’ error during Hearing Test?

A hearing test is a delicate process that needs a pristine environment to get perfect results. Any harsh external sound can influence the Hearing Test procedure, because the entire process is too complex. The microphones on the AirPods Pro 2 applies algorithms to filter out the background noise during the hearing test process.

Fix 1 – Turn on Noise Cancellation mode

You have to run this hearing test while using the AirPods Pro 2 in noise cancellation mode.

Step 1 – Wear the AirPods Pro 2 on your ears.

Step 2 – Load up the Settings page. You may open up the AirPods Pro 2 settings console directly from there.

Step 3 – Now, you may turn on the “Noise Cancellation” mode in there.

Now, you may run the hearing test in this mode. This way, there should not be any problem this time.

Fix 2 – Use alternative Apple devices

The cross-device compatibility of the Apple devices can help you in this process. So, if you are having this problem running the hearing test with your iPhone, you can achieve the same with the iPad.

But, you can only use iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 and later device, along with the latest updated firmware for the AirPods Pro 2 device.

Fix 3 – Disable the Spatial Audio feature

Apart from the Noise cancellation mode, hearing test may go wrong if you are using the spatial audio mode.

Step 1 – Make sure the AirPods Pro 2 is connected to the iPhone.

Step 2 – Next, open up the Control Center. Find the Volume Slider there and hold it down.

Step 3 – Turn off the “Spatial Audio” feature in there.

After turning off the spatial audio feature, run the test once more.

Fix 4 – Test in a low-noise environment

Apple documents some of the perquisite conditions that you must fulfil before you proceed to run the hearing test. We have already mentioned how complex this entire process is. So, you must provide a quiet environment to start the test.

This time., you won’t get the same ‘Unable to classify’ message while taking up the hearing test by the AirPods Pro 2. See if this works out for you!
