How to speed up Google Chrome on Windows 10 / 11

Chrome browser developed by Google is one of the best browsers among all other browsers. It is mostly used for its sensible UI and neat visualization. Chrome is meant for its fastness but sometimes users complain about facing performance issues like the slow loading browser. It may take a lot of time to load any content which makes the users frustrated. Not to worry in this article, we will discuss the causes and how to get rid of slow loading chrome browser.

What Causes The Load Issues In Chrome Browser

There may be various reasons which cause this issue, like third-party extensions which need some web browsing activity, hardware acceleration that utilizes the computer’s graphic processing unit which may slow down all other apps, corrupted cache files that can load the browser slow, and also pop up few errors which are actually not realistic, etc. There are many ways to speed up the process so now let us see the different methods to solve it.

Method 1: Clear The Browser Cache

The topics you search in the browser are stored in the browser history. The cache, cookies, and all these help you to search easily and are present in all the browsers. But when these data get corrupted by any chance then it might cause the issue. So clearing the browser history would help.

Step 1: Open the Chrome browser, and click on the 3 dots present at the top right corner. Click on Settings.

Step 2: Click on Privacy and Security on the left side and click on Clear browsing data which is present on the right side.

Step 3: Now appears a window that has Basic and Advanced options. Click on Basic, select the time range when you want to clear the data, and check all the checkboxes history, cache, and cookies. Then click on Clear data.

Step 4: Also click on Advanced and select the time range when you want to clear the data and check the needed checkboxes as per your requirement and click on Clear data.

Step 5: Now close and re-open the browser and check the performance.

Method 2: Preload pages to load faster

1 – Go to chrome://settings/cookies in Chrome.

2 -Make sure Preload pages Option is checked and selected.

Fix 3 – Remove the Extensions

1. Launch Chrome.

2. Type chrome://extensions in the address bar and hit Enter key.

3. Click on the Remove button associated with the extensions to remove them one by one from Chrome.

4. Confirm the extension removal by clicking on Remove again.

5.  You can check the speed to confirm whther removing a particular extension helped or not and then can pin down the problematic extension.

Method 4: Use OneTab extension

Download and install OneTab extension. Its a very popular extension which speeds up Chrome by freeing up unused memory used by all open tabs. It brings them down in one list and whenever you click on one tab, it opens that partuclar tab and brings down chrome memory use.

Method 5: Change The Name Of The Default Folder Created By Chrome

When you install chrome a default folder will be created, it is like a backup of your data. So in the long run, this folder might have more data which may lead to slow performance. Rename this folder so that a new default folder will be created.

Note: Before doing so take a backup of all your bookmarks, tabs, etc so that it can later be synced because this step will delete all the data present and reset the chrome.

Step 1: Open File Explorer by clicking on (Windows + E) key simultaneously.

Step 2: Copy the below line and paste it into the Address bar located at the top of  File Explorer.

Step 3: Find the Default folder and rename it to any of your choices like Default_copy, etc.

A new Default folder will be auto created which has the latest data only.

Method 6: Reset The Network Adapter

Using the help of network adapter computers can communicate across a network. It is a piece of hardware that acts as an interface between computer and network. This might also sometime cause the issue so let us see how to reset it.

Step 1: Open the Command Prompt as an Administrator. To do so click on the (Windows + X) key simultaneously and click on the Command Prompt (Admin)

Method 7: Disable the Hardware Acceleration Option

Hardware Acceleration is an option that supports the computer to perform a few things faster. Especially it is meant for speeding up graphic performance. If you are not a gaming person or do not use graphics-related options then better to disable it.

Step 1: Open the Chrome browser and on the top right corner click on 3 dots. Click on Settings.

Step 2: Scroll down to find the Advanced option on the left side. Click on it. Under the Advanced options click on System.

Step 3:  On the right side you can find Use hardware acceleration when available. Disable this by clicking on the toggle bar.

Method 8: Use The TroubleShoot Settings

With the help of troubleshooting, you can find out what is the cause of the issue. It finds the problem and gives some suggestions accordingly.

Step 1: Open Settings by using the (Windows + I) key simultaneously and Click on Update & Security.

Step 2: On the left pane click on Troubleshoot. Click on Additional troubleshooters which are present on the right side.

Step 3: Scroll down and check for Program Compatibility Trouble Shooter and click on it. And click on Run the troubleshooter.

Step 4: It will take a few seconds to detect the program which has problems. Then a list of programs appears, select Google Chrome from the list and click on Next.

Step 5: Follow the instructions and complete them. Then reload the browser and check if the performance issue is resolved.

Method 9: Use Clean Up Computer Option In Chrome

The clean-up tool finds harmful software which may also be one of the reasons to slow down the browser speed.

Step 1: Open the Chrome browser, and click on the 3 dots present at the top right corner. Click on Settings.

Step 2: On the left side scroll down and click on Advanced. Under advanced click on the Reset and clean up option.

Step 3: You can find an option called Clean up computer click on it and click on Find.

Step 4: Now it will scan your computer to check the harmful software, this will take a few minutes. If the harmful software is found it will ask to remove and a dialog box will appear. Click on the Remove button.

Step 5: Now open the browser and check if the load issue is solved.

Method 10: Reset the Google Chrome

Step 1: Open the Chrome browser, and click on the 3 dots present at the top right corner. Click on Settings.

Step 2: On the left side scroll down and click on Advanced. Under advanced click on the Reset and clean up option.

Step 3: Click on Restore settings to their original defaults and there appears a reset window, click on Reset settings.

Method 11: Update Chrome Browser

If you are using the older versions of chrome, this may cause a performance issue and makes it slow. So always upgrade the chrome version to the latest one.

Step 1: Open the Chrome browser, and click on the 3 dots present at the top right corner. Click on Help.

Step 2: Click on About Google Chrome in the list that appears.

Step 3: If you are on an older version it will have a button called Update. Click on it. If there is no update option that means you are on the latest version and it says Chrome is up to date.

Method 12: Re-install Google Chrome

In some cases, the chrome files would be corrupted and hence any of the solutions might not work. In this situation, you can uninstall google chrome completely and re-install it, where fresh files will be created due to which unwanted files or corrupted files will be deleted and hence the loading becomes faster.

Method 13: Remove Unwanted Apps And Disable Extensions

There would be applications in your system which you no longer require. These applications would occupy some resources, so removing those and the extensions would make the performance better.

Step 1: To disable the extension, navigate to the Application folder and find the chrome.exe shortcut file. To do so open File Explorer by clicking the (Windows + E) key simultaneously and copy the below address location and paste it into the Address bar located at the top of File Explorer.

Note: For a 32-bit system it is Program Files (x86), if your system is 32-bit you can search the file under the Program Files folder.

And also this is the default location, if you don’t have the shortcut file here then navigate to the location where you have placed it.

Step 2: Right-click on the chrome.exe – Shortcut file and in the appeared list click on Properties.

Step 3: Here under properties, click on the Shortcut tab, and in the target field at the last add the following line. Then click on OK.
