The badge notifications on individual app icons are extremely helpful in getting quick attention from the users. But, the same feature can become a point of concern if the incorrect notification badges start to appear on the app icons. In that case, we can assure you, this discussion and solution should take care of the problem.
What are these badges and why incorrect badges are showing unread messages?
The numbered badges that show up on the Messages app does show up the number of messages that you have not gone through yet. You can just take a quick glance of the screen, and you will know how many unread messages you have. Though this eases the experience of handling the device, but problems like seeing incorrect number badges can tarnish that experience as well.
Just like any other system, this is not completely flawless either. Like, it doesn’t have the capability of understanding whether you have actually read the messages directly from the Notification Center or the lock screen. Messages will still count those messages as ‘unread’ messages and chunk up the number of unread messages.
Fix 1 – Use Siri to read your messages
The easiest way to tackle this is to ask Siri to read all your unread messages and leave the iPhone alone for a while. When Siri finishes going through the messages, the badge will disappear from the Messages app.
Step 1 – Just hold down the Power button for a few seconds, and you shall see the Siri dialogue has appeared on the screen.
Or, you can just say “Hey Siri!” to invoke Siri as well.
Step 2 – Then, read out this dialogue to Siri –
Hey Siri! Read all my messages.
This way, Siri will start to read out all the messages from all the unread conversations one-by-one.
Now, if you don’t want to listen to all these messages, put the device on silent mode and leave it alone for a few minutes. The amount of time Siri takes to go through all of them does vary according to the number of unread messages you have.
Fix 2 – Individually read the messages
Additionally, you can just go through each unread conversations. If you are not using Siri and have less number of messages, this is the best choice for you.
Step 1 – Just open up the Messages app.
Step 2 – The unread conversations do carry a blue dot with the conversation header. So, open any such conversation.
Step 3 – This way, go through the entire list of unread conversations and read all those messages.
Once you have made sure there are none of the conversations have a blue dot with it, the incorrect badge will disappear.
