How to Temporarily / Permanently Rotate a PDF in Google Drive

When you scan and upload a PDF document to your Google Drive, the chances of that PDF being in an upside down direction or being in a right to left direction is very high. Definitely, it is a pain to read a document that’s not in an upright position. Sometimes, you just need to temporarily view the document, close it and leave. Some other times, you need to get the orientation of the PDF corrected permanently, so that you can save the headache of correcting its orientation again in the future. Bonus Cookie: You can open any PDF in Google Chrome and then correct its orientation as detailed in Section 1. After correcting the orientation, you can follow the steps detailed in Section 2 to successfully save the orientation corrected PDF to your machine. The PDF doesn’t have to be in Google Drive itself, for this trick to work.

Section 1: How to Temporarily Rotate a PDF in Google Drive

Step 1: Open Google Drive through a browser of your preference. Once you have signed in, navigate to the pdf which needs orientation correction.

Double click on the PDF first, to open it on the browser itself.

Step 2: At the top right corner of the page, find and click on the Print icon.

Step 3: As next, click on the Rotate counterclockwise button and correct the orientation of the PDF.

If your browser doesn’t have the Rotate counterclockwise button, then you can right click anywhere on an empty space on your PDF and then click on the Rotate clockwise or the Rotate counterclockwise button as per your preference.

Step 4: Tada, you have successfully corrected the orientation of the PDF that you have in your Google Drive.

But wait, this is only temporary. If you refresh the page or close the tab, this change will be gone. If you would like to permanently change the orientation of your PDF, then you can follow the steps detailed in Section 2.

Section 2: How to Permanently Rotate a PDF in Google Drive

To permanently change the orientation of a PDF in your Google Drive, firstly, you need to follow the steps detailed in Section 1 and temporarily change its orientation. That’s it, we will take it from there.

Step 1: Once you have the PDF with the correct orientation, click on the Print icon again, at the top right corner of the window.

Step 2: Don’t bother about the orientation of the PDF here, simply choose Microsoft Print to PDF option from the Destination drop-down menu and then hit the Print button at the bottom.

Step 3: In the Save Print Output As window, navigate to the location of your preference, give a new name (you can even give the old name) to your rotated PDF and then click on the Save button.

Step 4: That’s it. Now you have the orientation corrected PDF stored in your local machine. As next, let’s upload it to your Drive.

For that, get back to Google Drive and click on the New button on the left window pane.

Step 6: Navigate to the location where you have saved your rotated PDF and click on it. After that, click on the Open button.

Step 7: That’s it. You now have your rotated PDF uploaded to your Google Drive. From the preview itself, you can see that the orientation is now corrected for the PDF.

Note: If you wish, you can now delete the old PDF from your Google Drive, just by right clicking on the old PDF file and then by hitting the Remove option from the right click context menu that expands out.
