Zip failed error in Google Drive – How to fix

Having the ‘Zip failed‘ error prompt while accessing some of the large files in the Google Drive? A handful of users have come across this problem while downloading the large files from their drive. If you try to find the reason behind this problem, you may not be able to do that, there are just so many possible reasons behind this issue.

Why am I having the Zip failed error in Google Drive?

We all store many types of files on our Google Drive. Google offers almost limitless storage solutions so that users can’t save files irrespective of file size. While there is a limit to maximum size of file that can be uploaded to the Google Drive, normal users hardly ever reach that. But, while downloading big files, or bulk downloading, your Google Drive does automatically zip the files and download them.

During this process, if any error incurs, it shows up the “Zipping failed” or “Download failed” message on the screen. There are some very easy troubleshooting solutions available that can address the problem very quickly.

Fix 1 – Download the files from Incognito tab

It seems that this problem doesn’t appear if you download the files directly from an incognito tab.

Step 1 – On the Chrome browser, tap the three-dot button.

Step 2 – Next, tap the “New Incognito tab” to open up a private tab on the browser.

Step 3 – Load up the Google Drive there.

Step 4 – As you are trying to access the Drive from an incognito tab, tap the “Sign in” button to log in using your Google account credentials.

Step 5 – Now, input your Google account credentials (Gmail ID, password) and sign in to your account. You may have to verify your access externally.

Step 6 – Once you have access to your Google Drive, initiate the downloading process.

Don’t close the incognito tab while you are downloading the files. You won’t face the ‘Zip failed’ error message during the process.

Fix 2 – Modify the file permissions

Ownership restrictions on the downloadable files can create this obstruction. You have to check the exclusive permission before you start downloading the files.

Step 1 – Locate the file that you want to download in the Google Drive.

Step 2 – Then, right-click the file and tap “File Information” to load up the file information tab.

Step 3 – On the right-hand panel, reach the “Details” tab.

Step 4 – Check the ‘Who has access‘ tab there.

If you don’t have proper permission for the file, you can’t download or access that. In that case, you must contact the original file owner to request access to the file.

Only with proper authority over the file, you can initiate and complete the downloading process.

Fix 3 – Use other browser

This problem can be limited to a particular browser as well. While your default browser may have some plug-ins or extensions that can hinder the zipping and downloading process, you should consider an alternative to download the browser.

There are some reports from Chrome users about this problem, while a switch to a secondary browser like MS Edge or Mozilla Firefox has provided more favorable results.

Fix 4 – Download single file at a time

Bulk downloading multiple files from the G Drive can be responsible for the corruption during the zipping process. So, if you have to download multiple files with huge file size, consider not downloading all them at once. Download the big files once at a time, while you can choose to download multiple small files at the same time.
