Microsoft Edge Browser Crashes Suddenly After Opening [Solved]

The Microsoft Edge browser is the company’s recently released upgraded version of Internet Explorer. This browser was popular, and it quickly became everyone’s favourite.

Recently most of the users have reported that they are experiencing an issue where the Microsoft Edge browser suddenly crashes after it is launched by the user on their windows system. They are helpless in the face of it. They tried rebooting the system numerous times, but the problem persisted.

There are a number of reasons which is causing the Edge browser to crash unexpectedly after launching and they have corrupted browsing history, outdated Microsoft edge browser application, extensions installed on the browser from third party sources, etc.

In order to solve this problem, we analyzed these key points mentioned above and came up with a few fixes in this post, that will assist the user to resolve it easily.

Fix 1 – Repair the Microsoft Edge browser

NOTE: This method will reset your Edge browser and you will lose all the data from the Microsoft edge that were saved earlier like settings, etc.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and type installed apps.

Step 2: Select Installed apps system settings from the results as shown below.

Step 3: Search for the Microsoft Edge application on the list and click three horizontal dots to check more options.

Step 4: Then, click Modify from the list.

Step 5: This will open the repair window. So click the Repair button to start repairing the edge browser.

Step 6: It will then start downloading the Microsoft Edge browser.

Fix 2 – Close All Instances of Edge browser Using Task Manager

Normally, we open any application by clicking twice or three times. On the system, it generates many instances of that application. These difficulties occur when one of these instances becomes corrupted or stuck.
So the best approach is to use the task manager to close any instances of the application that are still active, as seen below.

Step 1: Right-click on the Start button on the Taskbar and select Task Manager from the context menu as shown below.

NOTE: You can also press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC keys together to open Task Manager directly.

Step 2: This opens up the Task Manager window on the system.

Step 3: In the Task Manager window, make sure you are on the Processes tab.

Step 4: Check under the Processes tab, if there are any instances of the Microsoft Edge browser still active.

Step 5: To close that instance, right-click on it and select End task from the list as shown below.

Step 6: This closes the instance of the Edge browser on the system.

Step 7: Once all the instances of the Edge browser are closed, close the task manager window.

Fix 3 – Clear Browsing History and other data

Sometimes when the browsing history and other data like cookies, etc. gets corrupted on the system, it creates problems while using the browser application. So our suggestion is to clear/delete the browsing history and other data of your Microsoft Edge browser application with the following steps explained below.

Step 1: Open Microsoft Edge browser by pressing the Windows key and typing microsoft edge.

Step 2: Then, select Microsoft Edge app from the search results as shown below.

Step 3: In Microsoft Edge, open a new tab.

Step 4: Type edge://settings/profiles in the new tab and press the Enter key.

Step 5: On the Settings page, go to the Privacy, search, and services option on the left side panel as shown below.

Step 6: Then on the right side, scroll down the page and click Choose what to clear button of the Clear browsing data now option.

Step 7: This will pop up a small window on the screen where you need to select All time as Time range and also make sure to select all the checkboxes available (Browsing history, Download history, Cookies and other site data & Cached images and files, etc.)

Step 9: Then, click Clear now to delete all the data from the browser.

Fix 4 – Turn Off / Disable all the Extensions on the Edge browser

When an application installs add-ons or extensions from third-party sources, it frequently causes unanticipated issues. As a result, it’s a good idea to disable these extensions from the Edge browser and see whether they were causing any issues.
The methods below will show you how to disable/turn off extensions on your system’s Edge browser.

Step 1: Open the Edge browser on your system.

Step 2: In a new tab, type edge://extensions/ and hit the Enter key that opens the extensions page.

Step 3: On the Extensions page, you will see all the installed extensions on the Edge browser.

Step 4: Disable those extensions by clicking on its toggle button and turning it off as shown below.

Step 5: Once all the extensions are disabled, restart the Edge browser once and check if this solved the issue.

Fix 5 – Reset Edge browser

1 – Go to edge://settings/reset in Edge

2 – Click on Restore settings to their default values

1 – Go to edge://settings/help in Edge Browser via address bar

2 – It will auto upodate itself and will show you the message that Microsoft edge is up to date

Fix 7 – Delete Microsoft edge folder

1 – Open RUN by hitting Windows and R key

2 – Now, copy and paste the path shown below in run box and click OK

3 – Locate Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder and rename it.

Fix 8 – Re-Register the Microsoft Edge Browser on the system

We have explained below in detail some simple steps on how to re-register the Microsoft Edge browser on the system.

Step 1: First close all the instances of Edge browser on your system.



Step 2: Then, press windows +E keys together to open the file explorer.

Step 3: On the top menu bar, go to View > Show > Hidden items to enable the user to view all the hidden files or folders as shown in the below image.

Step 4: Once it is done, close the file explorer.

Step 5: Open the Run command box by pressing Windows + R keys together.

Step 6: Copy and paste the below-given path in the run box and press Enter key to go to the Edge browser data folder.

Step 7: Then, right-click on the empty space in the folder that opened just now.

Step 8: Select Properties from the context menu as shown below to open the MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder’s properties.

Step 9: In the General tab, Uncheck the Read-only checkbox and click Apply and OKĀ to reflect the changes and close the window.

Step 10: Restart the system and once it boots up, press windows +R keys and type powershell.



Step 11: Press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER keys to open the PowerShell application as an admin.

Step 12: Execute the below command to re-register the Edge browser.

Fix 9 – Perform Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter

Since the Microsoft Edge app is a part of the windows store, we can start running the windows store apps troubleshooter to check if there is any problem with the Microsoft store.

Let us see how this can be done with the steps given below.

Step 1: First of all, open the Run dialog box by pressing and holding windows +R keys together.

Step 2: In the Run box, type control.exe /name Microsoft.Troubleshooting and hit the Enter key to open Troubleshoot page.
