While installing the OneDrive on your Windows 10, the installation process may crash and show up this error message – ‘OneDrive installation error code 0x80040c97’. This problem usually occurs if there is an existing OneDrive application already installed. Though you may see the same message due to functional issues. Whatever may be the reason, if you want a quick resolution for this problem, follow these fixes.
Workaround:- Try running the exe files as administrator, by right clicking on it and choosing run as administrator.
Fix 1 – End the OneDrive process and uninstall, re-install the OneDrive
Follow these steps.
Step 1 – Terminate existing OneDrive process
1. Press the Windows key+X keys together.
2. Then, click on the “Windows PowerShell(Admin)” to access the PowerShell window.
3. Once the PowerShell window appears, type this code into it and hit Enter to execute the command.
taskkill /f /im OneDrive.exe
Once you have done that, close the PowerShell window. This will kill all the running OneDrive processes on the system.
Step 2 – Uninstall the OneDrive application
1. You have to right-click on the Windows icon and click on the “Run“.
2. Then, write “appwiz.cpl” and hit Enter.
3. Once the Program and Features window opens up, right-click on the “Microsoft OneDrive” app and click on “Uninstall“.
Follow the on-screen instructions to completely remove the OneDrive app from the system.
Restart your computer.
Step 3 – Install OneDrive from Store
1. At first, open the Microsoft Store on your computer.
2. Then, type “OneDrive” in the search box.
3. Then, click on the “OneDrive” from the search results.
4. Click on “Get” to get the OneDrive app.
11. Finally, click on “Install” to install the OneDrive app on the system.
Open the OneDrive from the search box and check it out.
[NOTE–
Installing the OneDrive app from Store is preferred over using the traditional app for many reasons.
But if the OneDrive from Store isn’t available or can’t be installed, you can do this –
a. Go to the official Microsoft OneDrive Download page.
b. Click on “Download” to download the setup and install it on your computer.
Wait for the installer to download.
c. Simply, double-click on the “OneDriveSetup“.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Fix 2 – Run the installer as an admin
1. Just open the location of the OneDrive installer.
2. Then, right-click on the “OneDrive Setup” and click on “Run as administrator“.
Follow the steps to install the OneDrive on your computer.
Fix 3 – Alter the registry entry
You can alter the registry editor entry to fix this problem.
1. What you have to do is press the Windows key and the R key together.
2. In the Run terminal, write “regedit” and click on “OK” to access the Registry Editor screen.
NOTE –
After the Registry Editor opens up, click on “File” and click on “Export” to create a new backup on your computer.
If anything goes out of hand while altering the registry, you can easily retrieve the registry back to normal.
3. After taking the backup, go to this location-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
4. Check if there is any ‘OneDrive’ key.
5. Otherwise, right-click on the “Windows” key.
Then, click on “New>” and then on “Key“.
6. Next, name the key as “OneDrive“.
7. Now, right-click on the “New>” and then click on “DWORD (32-bit) Value“.
8. Name the key as “DisableFileSyncNGSC“.
9. Then, double click on the “DisableFileSyncNGSC” key to modify it.
10. After that, you have to type “0” in the ‘Value data:’ box.
11. Click on “OK” to save this change.
After that, close the registry editor window. Restart your computer.
Fix 4 – Use an older version of OneDrive
Some users have fixed the issue by using the older versions of OneDrive.
Step 1 – Terminate existing OneDrive process
1. Right-click on the Windows icon and click on the “Windows PowerShell(Admin)” to access the PowerShell window.
2. Once the PowerShell window appears, write down this command and hit Enter to kill the running OneDrive processes.
taskkill /f /im OneDrive.exe
Once you have done that, close the PowerShell window.
Step 2 – Uninstall the OneDrive application
1. Next, press the Windows key+R keys together.
2. Then, type”appwiz.cpl” and hit Enter.
3. You have to locate the “Microsoft OneDrive” from the list of installed apps.
4. Right-click on the “Microsoft OneDrive” app and click on “Uninstall“.
Now, wait for Windows to uninstall the OneDrive app from your computer.
Restart your computer to reset the cache.
Step 3 – Download and install older versions of OneDrive
1. To download the older version of OneDrive, go here.
2. As this is a Vietnamese website, you have to translate it. Upon opening the website you will notice a prompt to change the language.
3. Click on “English” to translate the page.
4. You will see a list of versions of the OneDrive apps.
5. After that, click on “See more” to view the full list of OneDrive apps.
6. Then, press the “Ctrl+F” keys together.
7. Paste this version in the search box. It will highlight the particular version you are looking for.

8. Then, click on the “Download” beside the highlighted version to download the setup file.
Once you have downloaded the setup file, close the browser window.
9. Then, go to the location where you have downloaded the setup file.
10. Next, double click on the setup file to run it.
Wait for the installation process to be over. This time you won’t face the error code 0x80040c97. Your problem is solved.
