Bad Image Error is a very old issue that keeps popping up on any Windows desktop when the user tries to run the already installed program or try to install a new program including the Microsoft Store apps. The error message reads as follows,
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\<dllFileName> is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0xc0000006.
Broken system files, Windows images, and spyware might cause this issue and distract the flow of the system process in Windows 11. If you are someone who is also facing the same issue with the Bad Image error, this article brings you different fixes that you can try out and see if the error gets resolved.
Fix 1: Uninstall Windows Update
The most common reason for the Bad Image Error 0xcoooooo6 to show up is a bad windows Update, if installed, may conflict with third-party software that is already installed on the system.
Step 1: Press Win+I keys to open the Settings Page.
Step 2: Click on Window Update preset on the left-side menu.
Step 3: Now, click on Update History.
Step 4: Scroll down to select Uninstall Updates.
Step 5: The Installed Updates applet opens. Click on the windows update that is causing the issue
Step 6: Right-click on the Windows Update and click on uninstall.
Fix 2: Uninstall and Reinstall the program
Step 1: In the Taskbar search tab, Type Control Panel and hit Enter.
Step 2: Click on Uninstall a Program under Programs.
Step 3: Now, right-click on the program that is causing Bad Image Error and click on Uninstall.
4Step 4: Finally, go to the Programs Official site to download it again.
Step 5: After the download is complete, follow the on-screen instructions and reinstall it.
NOTE: If you are unable to install or uninstall the problematic program, try using the Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter. To run the troubleshooter follow the steps given below.
Step 1: Right-click on the Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter and click on Open.
If you do not have the troubleshooter, download it from here.
Step 2: Click on Next.
Step 3: A pop-up window asks you whether you are facing the issue with installing or uninstalling the program.
Step 4: Simply, follow the on-screen instructions to remove the threats if any are found.
Fix 3: Run SFC and DISM Scan
Step 1: Press the Win+R keys to open the Run Window.
Step 2: Type cmd and press Cltr+Shift+Enter keys together.
User Account Control prompts for permission, Click on Yes.
Step 3: Now, Copy-Paste the commands given below one after the other in the Command Prompt window and hit Enter.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Step 4: After the DISM scan is complete, copy-paste the command below and hit Enter.
sfc /scannow
NOTE: If there is any issue regarding the system and its files. The sfc/scannow command will let you know.
Step 5: Once the scan is complete, Type exit and Close the Command Prompt Window.
Step 6: Restart your system and see if the error is resolved.
Fix 4: Replace/re-register the .dll File
The Bad Image Error message discloses to us the path of the dll file that is faulty or corrupted. The path is shown as
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\<dllFileName>
We just need to re-register this file. To do this follow the steps given below.
Step 1: Press the Win+R keys to open the Run Window.
Step 2: Type cmd and press Cltr+Shift+Enter to open the command prompt as admin.
UAC will ask for permission, Click Yes.
Step 3: Next, copy-paste the given command and hit Enter.
regsvr32 "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\<dllFileName>"
Here, the dllfilename should be the name of the faulty file shown in the error message.
Step 4: If you wish to re-register all the dll files ( when more than one dll file is corrupted), copy-paste the command given below and hit Enter.
for %1 in (*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %1
Step 5: Once the process is completed, type exit to close the Command Prompt Window.
Sometimes, you may by mistake delete a particular dll file and find the Bad Image Error popping up. You can simply restore your deleted file from the Recycle Bin. If the deleted file is not seen in the Recycle Bin, you can restore it from another working Windows system. To do that, follow the steps below,
Step 1: Navigate to the location of the dll file present. The location is C:\Windows\System32\ folder.
Here, the folder name is AdvancedInstallers and the corrupted file is cmiv2.dll.
Step 2: Check and locate the particular dll file, copy it to the USB.
The file to be copied is cmiv2.dll.
Step 3: Insert the USB into the faulty system, paste the dll file in the exact location.
Here, the location is C:\Windows\System32\ AdvancedInstallers
Step 4: Open the corrupted file and see if the error is resolved.
Fix 5: Run Windows Defender Full Scan
Step 1: In the taskbar search tab, Type Full Scan and hit Enter.
Step 2: Scroll down to click on Scan Options.
Step 3: Now, click the radio button against Full Scan and click on Scan now.
Step 4: The scan will complete and let you know if there are any threats. You can simply, follow the on-screen instructions to remove the threat.
Fix 6: Perform System Restore
Step 1:In the taskbar search tab, Type rstrui and hit Enter.
Step 2: The System Restore Window opens, click on Next.
Step 3: Select a particular restore point where you do not find the Bad Image Error.
Step 4: Click on Next.
Step 5:Finally, Click on Finish.
Step 6: A confirmation dialogue box will appear on the screen, click on Yes.
Fix 7: Reset the PC
If all the fixes above do not work, try Resetting your system to remove the Bad Image Error 0xc0000006. To Reset your Pc, follow the steps given below.
Step 1: In the taskbar search tab, Type Windows Update and hit Enter.
Step 2: Click on Advanced Options.
Step 3: Under additional options, click on Recovery.
Step 4: Click on Reset this PC.
Step 5: Click on the option you wish for ( Remove Everything or Keep all my files).
Step 6: Select either cloud Reset or Local Reset.
Step 7: Finally, follow the on-screen instructions and click on the Reset option.
