Themes are the reason why the Windows system’s appearance is so appealing and cheerful. Themes are nothing but collections of different background images, colours, and sounds dedicated to a particular thing on the Windows system. Some themes are light and some dark depending on the preference of users.
Nowadays, a few Windows users started getting an error message on their Windows system randomly. The error message that appears on the screen is displayed below.
Windows can’t find one of the files in this theme.
Do you still want to save the theme?
The reasons for the possibility of causing this error message on any Windows device are listed below.
- Problem with the currently active theme.
- Theme syncing is enabled.
- Corrupted System data files.
- The background image which was set got corrupted.
On analyzing these factors mentioned above, we went through a lot of stuff and gathered information on them. In this article, we have come up with a bunch of solutions which will resolve this issue and won’t bother users with these types of error messages randomly.
Fix 1 – Disable the Sync settings on the Windows system
The executable file which is responsible for syncing the theme settings to the Windows system is SettingSyncHost.exe. When this file fails to sync the theme changes to your Microsoft account from the Windows device, this error message is thrown on the screen.
Therefore, we can try disabling the sync settings using the steps explained below.
Step 1: Press the Windows + I keys together on the keyboard to open the Settings app on the system.
Step 2: After the Settings app window opens, click Accounts on the left side menu.
Step 3: Scroll down the Accounts page on the right side and select Windows backup.
Step 4: This opens the Windows backup page on the system.
Step 5: Click on Remember my preferences to expand it.
Step 6: First, uncheck all 4 checkboxes (Accessibility, Passwords, Language preferences, Other Windows settings) by clicking on them as shown below.
Step 7: After unchecking these checkboxes, turn off the Remember my preferences toggle button to disable it.
Step 8: Once done, you can close the Settings app window.
Fix 2 – Change the currently active theme
If there is some problem with the currently active theme, it might cause such errors mentioned above in this article. So we can try changing the theme on the system and see if the problem got fixed.
Follow the steps below on how to change the theme on the Windows system.
Step 1: Go to Desktop and right-click on the empty space on Desktop.
Step 2: Select Personalize from the context menu as shown in the below image.
Step 3: This opens the Personalization page on the system.
Step 4: Now you can directly click on the theme available under the Select a theme to apply section as shown below.
Step 5: It lists all the default and predefined themes that came along with the Windows OS and also the ones which were downloaded by users from Microsoft Store.
Step 6: Once you have changed the theme, close the personalization page and see if the error message still persists.
Fix 3 – Replace the theme background with another image
When users apply the theme on the Windows system, the background image on the desktop screen is automatically set by the theme. So if this image file is corrupted or spoilt due to a virus attack or some other reason, it is prone to throw such errors on the system.
So let us try changing the desktop background on your system and see if this works.
Step 1: Press the Windows and I keys together to open the Settings app.
Step 2: Click the Personalization option on the left side and select Background on the right side of the settings app window.
Step 3: Under Personalize your background section, click the Browse photos button to select an image for the background from your computer.
Step 4: In the Open window, browse the photo from the directory and after selecting the image, click Choose picture.
Step 5: This will set the image you have selected by browsing as a desktop background.
Step 6: Once done, you can close the Background page.
Fix 4 – Disable the Screen Saver on the Windows system
Some users claimed to have fixed this kind of issue by disabling the screen saver on their Windows system. So we suggest our users try disabling the screen saver using the steps mentioned below.
Step 1: Open the Personalization page on the Settings app by right-clicking on the desktop screen and clicking Personalize from the context menu.

Step 5: Then click Apply and OK to make changes and close the screen saver settings window.
Fix 5 – Reinstall the Theme
Users are allowed to download and install their favourite kind of theme from the Microsoft Store where you can find a number of themes as per their choice. Some themes from the Microsoft Store are released by third-party sources and might cause an issue like the one mentioned above.
So the users can reinstall the theme. Here are the steps given below on how to remove the theme from the system and then install it again.
Step 1: Go to the Personalization page by clicking the Personalization option on the left side of the Settings app (Press Windows+I keys).

Step 7: After it is done executing, close the command prompt window and restart the system.
