Starting from Windows 10, Microsoft has released Microsoft Print to PDF feature where one can save any document as a PDF. To do so, one should choose Microsoft Print to PDF and click on Print. A prompt will be opened to confirm the name and location where the file is to be saved. Many users have reported that all of a sudden, this feature stops working. In this article, we will discover different ways to fix the Microsoft Print to PDF stopped working issue.
Fix 1: Disable and Re-enable Microsoft Print to PDF feature
Step 1: Search Turn Windows Features On or Off in the search box.
Step 2: In the appearing window, untick the option for Microsoft Print to PDF and click on the OK button
Step 3: Restart the Computer.
Step 4: Open Windows features again by searching it in windows search box.
Step 5: In the Windows Features window, Now, check Microsoft Print to PDF option back again and click on the OK button
Now, try if the Microsoft Print to PDF has started working. If not, try the next fix.
Fix 2: Do not use commas/special characters in the File name while saving
While you are saving the file, make sure there are no commas in the filename. At times, when commas or any other special notations are used, a file of 0 Byte size will be created in the saving folder. Thus it looks like Microsoft Print to PDF is not working
Fix 3: Do not save file in Documents folder
The files are usually saved in the destination folder specified by the User. However, at times, these files are saved in the default location. Try to save the file in a different location such as desktop and it will work as it has worked for most users.
Fix 4: Make Microsoft Print to PDF the default printer
Step 1: Open the Run Dialog
Step 2: Write control printers and press Enter
Step 3: In the Devices and Printers window that opens, Under Printers section, locate Microsoft Print to PDF
Step 4: Right-click on Microsoft Print to PDF and choose Set as default printer
Step 5: Reboot your system and check if the Microsoft Print to PDf feature starts working
Fix 5: Uninstall and Re-Install the Microsoft Print to PDF Drivers
Step 1: Open the Run Dialog (Windows+R)
Step 2: Type control printers and press OK
Step 3: In the Devices and Printers window that opens, Under Printers section, locate Microsoft Print to PDF
Step 4: Right-click on Microsoft Print to PDF and choose Remove device
Step 5: You will see a confirmation dialog. Click on Yes
Step 6: Complete the process of uninstalling
Step 7: In the Devices and Printers window, click on Add a printer option from the top menu
Step 8: In the wizard that opens, click on The printer that I want isn’t listed as shown below
Step 9: Click on Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and click on the Next button
Step 10: Tick on Use an existing port and choose PORTPROMPT: (Local Port) from the drop-down
Step 11: From the Manufacturer list, select Microsoft. From the Printers list select Microsoft Print To PDF. Click on the Next button
NOTE: If you cannot find Microsoft Print To PDF option in the list, click on the Windows Update button and then try again.
Step 12: In the appearing window, tick on Replace the current driver and click on the Next button
Step 13: Give a suitable Printer Name and click on the Next button
Step 14: In the window, you can see that the printer installation is in progress
Step 15: Once done, click on the Finish button
Now, check if Microsoft Print to PDF feature starts working as expected.
Fix 6: Change the folder where the files are saved
Some people have reported that this simple trick worked in their case.
When you are saving the file, try giving a different location and see if this works in your case.
In the address bar, type a different location.
In case this did not help, try the next fix.
Fix 7: Check for Windows Update
Most of the time, having your Windows Operating System up-to-date alone can fix almost all of your windows related issues.
Step 1: Open the Run Dialog. One can use the shortcut Windows+R
Step 2: Type ms-settings:windowsupdate and hit Enter.
Step 2: Click on the Check for updates button.
Step 3: Windows will check for any new updates. If any new updates are found, they will be downloaded and installed.
Step 4: Click on the Restart now button for the changes to take place.
