How to Fix Background Slideshow Not Working in Windows 11, 10

On the Windows 11/10 system, several users have claimed that the slideshow on the desktop background has ceased working. Users are baffled as to why the photos on the laptop’s backdrop screen are no longer sliding.

The causes of this problem with the slideshow not working are described below.

  • Installed Third-party desktop customization applications.
  • In the Power Options, the desktop background slideshow settings have been paused.
  • The folder containing the backdrop images is deleted.
  • It’s possible that the screen is turned off after the slideshow has finished playing.

Following our investigation of the aforementioned reasons, we have created a list of fixes that will undoubtedly help users in solving the issue.

Workarounds

  1. Deactivated windows can be one of the causes of this issue. So, please try to activate the windows and check if the issue is fixed.
  2. Try choosing Windows spotlight from the list in the Background option Via the Settings app > Personalization which actually changes the wallpaper often using Bing from the internet.

Change ‘Slideshow On Battery’ settings to Available in Power Options

By default, the slideshow on the battery setting is paused in the Power Options. So to solve this issue, it is a better idea to change this setting and make it available. By making this change, the slideshow will work on the laptop when on battery.

Follow these steps given below in order to change the settings in Power Options on your windows system.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and type edit power plan.

Step 2: Then, select the Edit power plan option from the search results as shown below.

Step 3: On the Edit plan settings page, click Change advanced power settings as shown below.

Step 4: This will open the Power Options window for the balanced plan.

Step 5: Double-click on the Desktop background settings option to expand it.

Step 6: Then, again double-click on the Slide show option to expand it.

Step 7: Click on the On Battery option and then select the Available option from the dropdown option as shown below.

Step 8: Finally, click Apply and OK to reflect the changes and close the Power Options window.

Now the slideshow must start working on your system.

 

Make sure the Folder and background images are not deleted

Please follow these points given below to solve this issue.

  1. Verify whether the folder that contains all the background images is present and not deleted.
  2. Check if there are more than 1 or 2 pictures in the folder because a slideshow needs at least 2 pictures.
  3. Make sure all the pictures are there in the right folder and not in any sub-folder within it.

Uninstall any third-party Desktop Customization Apps

Sometimes, the users may forget about any desktop customization software that has been installed earlier on the system. This might be interfering with the slideshow feature on the desktop background. So, we recommend our users uninstall any desktop customization software from the system.

Here are a few steps which explain how to do it.

Step 1: Press the Windows key on the keyboard and type installed apps.

Step 2: Select Installed apps system settings from the search results as shown below.

Step 3: Scroll down the Installed apps page, and click on the three horizontal dots of the desktop customization app to see more options.

Step 4: Select Uninstall option from the list.

NOTE: As an example, we have chosen the Snipping tool app to show how to uninstall it. You need to choose desktop customization apps like Lively Wallpaper, BeWidgets, etc.

Step 5: Click Uninstall again to start uninstalling the app.

Step 6: Once done, close the Installed apps page.

Now check if the slideshow is working!

 

Change the Advanced slideshow settings using the Settings app

Most people who use the slideshow as their wallpaper also use it as their lock screen background. There is a setting called Advanced slideshow settings under the Lock Screen option in the Settings app.

If any time duration is selected for Turn off the screen after the slideshow has played for option, it will create this issue.



As a result, we recommend that users deactivate this option using the easy steps outlined below.

Step 1: Go to the Personalization page by right-clicking on the Desktop empty space and selecting Personalize from the context menu as shown below.

Step 2: On the Personalization page, click the Lock screen option as shown below.

Step 3: Under Advanced slideshow settings, make sure Don’t turn off is selected from the dropdown list for Turn off the screen after the slideshow has played for option as shown in the below screenshot.
