Can’t download images in WhatsApp Desktop – How to fix

Facing some problem downloading images in WhatsApp Desktop app? The desktop client has become so popular by shredding off the dependency of the mobile client. But, if you are having some difficulty downloading images from your WhatsApp Desktop client, this guide will be your one-stop solution.

Fix 1 – Image file is too old

There is a limit to the number of items WhatsApp does sync on their Desktop clients. WhatsApp Desktop is configured like this to reduce the media storage overhead on the desktop. So, they have put a time limit. You won’t be able to find or download images beyond this time limit without using your phone. Connect your phone or open up WhatsApp on the phone and only then, you can download images.

Fix 2 – Free up more space

WhatsApp stores the images in the Downloads folder under Windows root directory. So, if you don’t have enough free space in the Windows drive (generally, C: drive), images won’t get downloaded automatically.

Step 1 – Open the File Explorer.

Step 2 – Go to “This PC” to check the status of storage condition.

You can free up space in the C: drive by deleting unnecessary files, videos or anything of considerable size. Emptying the Recycle Bin may also do the trick.

Fix 3 – Enable Automatic Downloads

There is an ‘Automatic Downloads’ feature on WhatsApp Desktop client that lets you store the images, documents or other files on your desktop.

Step 1 – Open up the WhatsApp Desktop.

Step 2 – In the Desktop client, tap the “Settings” button on the left tab.

Fix 4 – Test network connection

If the network is down, there aren’t any chance of getting your photos downloaded automatically on your desktop. You must be on an unmetered Wi-Fi or broadband connection for this feature to function. WhatsApp desktop restricts the automatic download function while you are on mobile data. So, connect to a different network if you want this feature to work.
