How YouTube was born
As per legend the idea for developing a video sharing site came to Steve Chen and Chad Hurley when they were unable to share a video shot at a party hosted at Chen’s apartment. They faced a roadblock due to size limit of email attachment.
As per other story, the idea for YouTube came, when co-founder Karim was unable to find the “Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction” video on internet.
Chen and Hurley says that the original idea was to develop a video version of Hot or Not- an online dating site. But soon they dropped the idea.
The domain name www.youtube.com was activated on Valentine Day of 2005.
First YouTube video
The first YouTube video was uploaded 67 days after its domain registration on April 23, 2005. It was uploaded by site co-founder Jawed Karim with the username jawed. It was shot by Yakov Lapitsky where Karim is talking about his interest in really long trunks of elephants.

2007 YouTube equals 2000 entire internet
As per one estimate YouTube alone consumed as much bandwidth in 2007 that was equivalent to the total bandwidth consumed by entire internet in the year 2000.
YouTube bullies utube
The site’s domain www.youtube.com initially created problem for www.utube.com. They filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against YouTube and finally they relented when they changed the domain to www.utubeonline.com
In February 2015, it launched an app call YouTube Kids, specifically for children. The app have parental controls.

YouTube features an April Fool prank each year on April 01, starting from the year 2008.
While a video is buffering on YouTube you can play the snake game. You just have to press any arrow key and the game will automatically start.
Most watched, most disliked videos
Most watched video on YouTube is Psy’s Gangnam style. The video prompted YouTube to make a change to their video view counter. The popular video exceeded 2,147,483,647 views- maximum allowable limit set by YouTube. They have set the maximum counter to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808. The probability of any video crossing this limit is almost impossible in my lifetime.
Justin Bieber’s Baby is most disliked video on the site with more than 4 million dislikes and counting. It has also garnered more than a billion views. Sometimes bad publicity is also good… 🙂
