Many iPhone users have observed an unusual issue with their iPhones. When they are not using it for a certain amount of time, it does not go into sleep mode. This is causing a problem for them since it is draining their battery because of huge consumption due to screen brightness being turned on all the time.
There are reasons why this iPhone not going to sleep when not used as listed below.
- Raise to Wake setting is enabled
- iPhone not updated
- Auto-Lock time settings must have been changed
- The attention-aware setting is changed
In this article, we have compiled a bunch of solutions that can assist users who are facing the iPhone not going to sleep when not used issue on their iPhones.
Fix 1 – Modify the Auto-Lock Setting on your iPhone
The auto-lock feature on your iPhone is the setting when enabled, automatically locks the iPhone after a certain time of inactivity. If the Auto-Lock setting is set to an option called Never, then it will never lock your iPhone at all. So we recommend that you have to set the Auto-lock setting to 30 seconds, 1 minute, etc. but not Never.
Follow the steps to change the Auto-Lock setting on your iPhone.
Step 1: Open the Settings page on your iPhone.
Step 2: Tap on the Display & Brightness option as shown in the below screenshot.
Step 3: Scroll down the page and tap on Auto-Lock.
Step 4: On the Auto-Lock page, tap on the time frame after which your iPhone you want to get locked like 30-seconds, 1 minute, etc.
Step 5: After changing this setting, this issue will get resolved.
Fix 2 – Check the Attention Aware settings
This method applies to those iPhone users who have iPhone X or above since the Attention Aware feature is not available on older models. The Attention Aware feature lets the iPhone awake when it detects your face or eyes near it and considers it as an activity. So this might be the reason why your iPhone does not get locked even after a long time of not using it.
Follow the steps below on how to disable the Attention Aware feature.
Step 1: After unlocking your iPhone, go to the Settings page.
Step 2: Tap on the Accessibility option once.
Step 3: Then choose the Face ID & Attention option by tapping on it.
Step 4: Next, disable the Attention-Aware Features by turning off its switch as shown in the below screenshot.
Fix 3 – Disable AssistiveTouch
Some iPhone users have claimed that they were able to fix this issue by turning off the Assistive Touch option on their iPhones. So let us also try this method once and see if this works for us too.
Here are the steps on how to disable Assistive Touch on your iPhone.
Step 1: Open the Settings page.
Step 2: Scroll down the page and tap on the Accessibility option as shown below.
Step 3: Then select the Touch option by tapping on it once.
Step 4: Now tap on the AssistiveTouch option at the top of the page.
Step 5: Disable the AssistiveTouch option by tapping on its toggle button as shown in the below screenshot.
Fix 4 – Turn Off the Raise to Wake option
The Raise to Wake setting enables the iPhone to wake up if you raise or move your iPhone physically and this will be considered an activity. So the iPhone will not be locked unless you press the power button. Let us try turning off the Raise to Wake setting on your iPhone and see if this helps.
Step 1: Go to the Settings page by tapping on the Settings icon as shown in the below screenshot.
Step 2: Then tap on the Display & Brightness option as shown below.
Step 3: Now scroll down and disable the Raise to Wake option by tapping on its toggle button.
Step 4: That’s it! This should fix the problem.

Additional Fixes
Update your iPhone
If any device’s software is not updated to its latest version, it may not work as expected and might create tons of problems like those discussed above in this article. So it is better to try updating the iPhone and see if this helps.
- To do so, go to Settings > General > Software Update page.
- Wait for some time till it loads any updates available.
- If there are any updates, please tap on Download and install to start downloading and installing the update on your iPhone.
- Once it gets updated, check if the issue still remains.
Force Restart iPhone
Sometimes, force restarting the iPhone helps in resolving most problems in the iPhone and it can be done simply using the steps below.
- To force restart your iPhone, press the volume up button once and release it.
- After that, press the volume down button and release it.
- Press the side button of your iPhone for around 10 seconds till you see the Apple logo sign on the screen.
- Once the iPhone starts, try and check if your iPhone gets locked when inactive.
Reset All Settings
When some of the settings in the iPhone are changed, this tends to create problems as mentioned in this article above also detecting which setting is causing this issue is not easy, so resetting all settings is the best way to fix this issue.
Here are the steps on how to reset all settings on your iPhone.
- Browse to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Choose the Reset All Settings option from the popped-up list.
- Confirm it by tapping on Reset All Settings.
- Once resetting all settings on your iPhone is completed, see if the fix worked or not.
