I was unable to delete the package folder – BUT – was able to rename it … as follows ..
C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Search_cw5n1h2txyewy_bak
A Windows restart automatically recreated a new “clean” version.

Finally i was able to see off those dumb 2007 office icons from search. Last step before windows restore – creating a second admin account and deleting windows search folder worked.
