Quick comment: for me my c:\Windows\System32\sru\ folder had over 32k logs (I presume above log clear is for this, i manually deleted the first 31.700 .log files), after that the SRUDB.dat went down from several gigs to few megas. Freed around 10+GB space. CPU usage and disk space OK since then.

I went through the steps here up to #3. #3 seems to have relieved the continual drain on the hard drive throughput that slowed things down.

I've rebooted several times since, and the problem has not come back. So if the processes
here are only going to be reinstated upon rebooting, that still has fixed my problems.
HP Pavilion g7 1260 us with Windows 10 current. Originally was a Win 7 or Win 8 machine given
to me by a friend who replaced it with an Apple product.

Absolutely useless and dangerous recommendations. Disabling windows update will prevent you from ever getting future updates, leaving your computer exposed to future vulnerabilities. Disabling BITS will prevent you from getting windows or Defender updates. And stopping svchost processes will leave your computer unstable and is useless because they will restart when you boot.
